Passion is Key – Planning your career

My partner and I founded EG Consulting because we wanted to help people realise their career potential and discover their passion. One of our key motto’s is ‘live for the week, not the weekend’. It may seem cheesy, but it is a great philosophy to live by. If you truly love your job and your life then week and weekend lose all meaning, that’s the aim.

Obviously, we all have bills to pay and a lifestyle to maintain. We also all have very different ideas about what success and fulfillment are. However, what I have tried to do in this article is give you some initial thoughts on how you can, gradually, start your career heading in the right direction.

Law in particular is a tough job. It often demands long hours, demanding clients, intricate work and stress. However, if you love what you do then these things are not a chore, they become a challenge.

 

  1. What do you REALLY want

It’s important to start any job search with a very simple question, what do you REALLY want? I capitalise ‘REALLY’ because this is key. You may think that you want to leave work early and lay on the sofa all afternoon catching up on Netflix, but do you? Or do you enjoy the buzz from working hard? Do you like going on expensive holidays? Do you actually like having a lot of people around you on a regular basis? Start with these questions, then plan.

  1. Be ready to take time getting there

Once you think you know what you are looking for take advice from someone (a mentor, another colleague you trust, a recruiter you have can rely on) on the best way to get there. DON’T just quit. Its easier to find a job when there is no pressure.

Your skill set may not be exactly right. Your passion might require you taking a step backwards. A lateral step into another role might be the first step in a longer process. Be prepared to take the time, ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’ and neither is your career.

  1. Be selfish and (at the right time) take risks

As hard as it is you need to look after yourself first when it comes to your career. If you are not happy then you are not, ultimately, helping your company. Also, if you are not happy then what is the point?!

Lawyers are naturally and by training risk averse. It is your job on a daily basis to advise clients on risk. You cant afford to apply this rigorous regime to your own search. You need to put yourself out there. Nothing changes if you don’t make it change.

  1. Objective Tests

Ask yourself practical questions.

  • What are my current skills?
  • What is the salary that I am on and, realistically, what can I expect from another role?
  • What are my timeframes for achieving this goal? What is my backup plan
  • What are the practicalities about family/future planning?
  • What companies do I admire? And why?
  • Do I want to work for a big company or a small one?
  • Do I want to start up my own company?
  • Do I want to go overseas?
